Cobb DOT's August work forecast for the Old Floyd Road bridge over the Norfolk Southern line called for traffic control, erosion control, the start of pile driving, and continued demolition of the old bridge's sidewalk and parapet. The bridge has been closed to traffic since July 6. A July 8 Cobb DOT closure list, reproduced by the Cobb County Courier, marked it "Active."
Most of the talk about the closure is about getting around it. The bigger change comes when the work ends. When the wider bridge reopens, the at-grade Church Street crossing closes for good. Downtown Austell will keep that rail crossing map well after the orange barrels come down. That makes this Halloween week, the holiday run at Six Flags and the December 4 parade the last stretch of events in Austell under the old crossing pattern, and the county ballot on November 3 asks what comes after it.
A Year-Long Closure With Two Finish Lines
Cobb County's June 23 closure notice closes the Old Floyd Road bridge from Monday, July 6, 2026, through Tuesday, July 6, 2027. The official detour uses Fontaine Road, Floyd Road and Veterans Memorial Highway.
The county's transportation project updates page gives a different date. It says construction on the project, numbered X2329 and paid for with 2016 SPLOST money, is scheduled to finish January 6, 2027. The county documents don't explain the six-month gap between January 6 and July 6. The safest planning date is the later one, the July 2027 closure end in the official notice, and any earlier reopening would come as a bonus.
On weekdays, the project page warns that lane closures and delays are possible Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. It points drivers to Cobb Commute for current advisories. On a weekday, that window covers the midday errand run to City Hall or the library.
Once the bridge reopens, the intersection itself works differently. The project widens the Old Floyd Road bridge to the east. It also adds a dedicated right-turn lane on westbound US 78/Veterans Memorial Highway at Old Floyd Road and a new right-turn lane on westbound Fontaine Road at Old Floyd Road.
What Changes for Good When the Bridge Reopens
Cobb's project description includes one line that matters more to downtown than the turn lanes. The project "will also close Church Street at the intersections with Front Street and Veterans Memorial Highway." The June notice spells out the rail side of the change: once the bridge widening is complete and reopened, "the at-grade Church Street crossing will be permanently closed."
The project runs in this order:
- Now through reopening: The Old Floyd Road bridge is closed. Church Street's at-grade crossing stays open, and traffic follows the Fontaine / Floyd / Veterans Memorial detour.
- Reopening day: The widened Old Floyd bridge carries traffic again, with new right-turn lanes on westbound Veterans Memorial and westbound Fontaine.
- After reopening: Church Street closes at Front Street and at Veterans Memorial Highway, and its at-grade rail crossing closes permanently.
The county calls the whole package a "safety and operational intersection improvement project." In practice, traffic that used to cross the tracks at street level on Church Street moves to a bridge above them. Anyone whose daily route uses Church Street at Front Street has until the bridge reopens to work out a new one.
The November 3 Ballot Covers the Next Crossing Questions
Church Street is the crossing change already funded and underway. Cobb County's 2028 SPLOST renewal goes to voters on November 3, as the Marietta Daily Journal reported, and it carries proposals for the rest of Austell's relationship with the railroad. The county's SPLOST 2028 project booklet lists these rail-related Austell items:
- Railroad crossing plan and intersection improvements, $1,000,000, Tier 1
- Silent Crossing Implementation, $1,000,000, Tier 2
- Ghost Depot Structure and Safe Pedestrian Plan, $150,000, Tier 2
The same Tier 1 list includes $50,000 for signage and wayfinding, $100,000 for streetscapes and $100,000 for gateway signs. The booklet does not describe the Ghost Depot or say where it is. It also does not say which crossings the silent-crossing item would cover.
These items are proposals. They depend on the November vote, and the booklet says collections would run from January 1, 2028, through December 31, 2033. None of them would bring construction downtown this fall. They do show that the city's planning list puts railroad crossings near the top. Austell's own history page calls it a rail division terminal.
The Fall and Holiday Calendar on the Detour Map
For the next few months, every downtown event happens with the Old Floyd bridge closed. These are the dates on the calendar as of this week:
| Date | Event | Where | Detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sunday, Oct. 25, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. | Adaptive Halloween Fair | Sweetwater Creek State Park | Games, prizes and pumpkin painting; welcomes sensory-seeking and sensory-avoidant visitors of all ages |
| Friday, Oct. 30 | Trunk or Treat | City of Austell | City calendar lists the date; start time varies between listings |
| Select nights through Nov. 1 | Fright Fest | Six Flags Over Georgia | Daytime Tricks and Treats runs weekends through the same date |
| Select days, Nov. 21 to Jan. 3, 2027 | Holiday in the Park | Six Flags Over Georgia | Park's winter run |
| Friday, Dec. 4 | Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting | City of Austell | City is seeking food and craft vendors and parade participants |
The Adaptive Halloween Fair at Sweetwater Creek is this Sunday. If you plan to stay for a hike, note that the park's main page says the interior of the mill ruins is closed except for guided hikes, school trips and special events. Visitors can still hike the exterior trails on their own.
The city's Trunk or Treat listing shows "6pm" in its title, but its date fields show an 8 a.m. start and 4 p.m. end. Check with the city before you go.
Fright Fest ends November 1. This year's lineup includes the new Infestation, Finklestein's House of Fun, the Dreadwell Brothers Carnival of Curiosities and Nevermore, along with SAW and The Conjuring Universe mazes. WSB-TV's September 24 report focused on the two movie-franchise mazes and the reworked Infestation and Finklestein's attractions. After a three-week break, the park reopens for Holiday in the Park on November 21.
The Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting is on December 4. The city's notice doesn't publish a route yet, so check the city's page as the date gets closer.
The Addresses That Stay Put
While the crossings change, downtown's everyday stops stay where they are, and most of them sit close together.
On Broad Street, the Cincinnati Junction buildings hold four tenants within 18 street numbers. The development's history page describes these buildings as original to the town.
- Austell Cowork, 2760 Broad St., offers memberships and day passes.
- Frog Rock Brewing, 2764 Broad St., lists current taproom hours on its site.
- Henderson's Coffee & Ice Cream, 2768 Broad St., Suite B.
- Pinnacle Places Events, 2778 Broad St.
Cincinnati Junction's space listings show Suite A at 2768 as available for a restaurant, so a fifth Broad Street tenant could join the cluster. Out on Veterans Memorial Highway, along the detour route, The Cenacle Coffee & Bistro is at 2844 Veterans Memorial Hwy.
The Threadmill Complex at 5000 Austell-Powder Springs Road is the city's civic anchor. The renovated former mill houses city, county and state offices along with private tenants. City Hall is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. The Sweetwater Valley Library is in Suite 100 and offers Saturday ukulele lessons on its program list. The city museum in the same building is listed as temporarily closed to the public. The SPLOST booklet proposes $300,000 for elevators and $750,000 for windows at the Threadmill.
Farther up the same road, Legion Park at Sweetwater Creek, 5514 Austell Powder Springs Rd SW, has a walking trail, playground, volleyball court, pavilion, gazebo, open lawn and outdoor fitness equipment. It also appears on the November ballot, with a $700,000 line for Legion Park courts and $100,000 for trails and trail improvements.
Through next summer, Old Floyd traffic follows the Fontaine / Floyd / Veterans Memorial detour. After the bridge reopens, Church Street no longer crosses the tracks.
At Nathan Fitts & Team, we follow changes like the Church Street closure because a road project can change how a home near downtown fits into daily life well after the work is done. If you'd like to talk through what the new crossing map means for your street, Let's Connect.
