At 6:00 on Friday evening, October 16, volunteers will stand at barricades around downtown Dahlonega and let in only vehicles with vendor passes. The streets will stay closed to everyone else until 8:00 on Sunday night. That makes 50 hours of Gold Rush Days, a festival that Discover Dahlonega describes as drawing over 300 art and craft exhibitors and food vendors.
The vendor timetable posted on the official Gold Rush Days site lays out the weekend hour by hour. Once Sunday night passes, the town's calendar runs on a much smaller scale. Between the festival and the Old Fashioned Christmas lighting on November 27, nearly everything scheduled downtown lasts an hour or two.
The Weekend Clock, as the Festival Publishes It
The festival's printed schedule is written for people setting up tents. Read from the other side of the barricade, it also shows when the square is open, when it's packed and when it starts to empty:
- Friday, 3:00 to 9:00 pm. Vendor registration in front of the Visitors Center. No tents can go up before 6:00.
- Friday, 6:00 pm. Streets close to the general public.
- Saturday, 7:30 am. All vendor and merchant vehicles must be off the streets so the Rotary-sponsored 5K can run through downtown.
- Saturday, 9:00 am to 5:30 pm. Booths open.
- Saturday, 3:00 pm. Gold Rush Days Parade.
- Saturday, 4:30 to 5:30 pm. Concert on the Main Stage.
- Sunday, 9:00 am to 5:30 pm. Booths open.
- Sunday, 6:00 pm. Only vendor cars are allowed back into town for loading.
- Sunday, 8:00 pm. Streets reopen to the public.
The festival enforces the daytime window strictly. Its vendor rules say booths must be set up and vehicles removed by 7:30 am Saturday and 8:00 am Sunday, and they put it plainly:
"No traffic is allowed through the festival area after these times and before 6:00 pm on both days. (Strictly enforced!)"
In practice, the square works as a pedestrian zone from early morning to 6:00 pm on both festival days, and the closure runs from Friday evening to Sunday night. On Sunday, booths close at 5:30 pm and vendor cars start rolling in to load at 6:00, so the closed streets have only a 30-minute window for foot traffic alone before loading begins. Normal traffic comes back at 8:00 pm.
Saturday Starts on the UNG Side of Town
Saturday's first events and its last parade stop both sit around the University of North Georgia campus.
The Dahlonega Rotary Gold Rush 5K starts at 8:00 am on Saturday, October 17. It starts and finishes in front of UNG's Memorial Hall at 82 College Circle, on a USATF-certified course that loops through the square during the festival. Online registration is $35 until October 16 at 11:59 pm. Race-day registration costs $45 and opens at 7:00 am in the Memorial Hall gymnasium. If you'd rather avoid the morning rush, packet pickup runs Friday, October 16, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Lumpkin County Board of Education, 56 Indian Drive.
The parade fills in the afternoon. According to the parade application page, it steps off at 3:00 pm Saturday and goes ahead rain or shine. Entries line up by 2:00 pm in front of the Dahlonega Police Department, and floats come into the lineup area from the north side of Highway 60, near the Walmart light. The route ends at the UNG Drill Field circle. Online applications close October 14. Walk-up entries are taken from noon to 2:00 pm, and the festival doesn't guarantee a spot to anyone arriving later. Floats can be no longer than 30 feet so they can make the turns around the square, and horses aren't permitted this year.
So the Highway 60 approach is busy at midday Saturday, and the campus edge is busy in the morning and again around 3:00. The street-by-street route is posted only as a map image on the festival site, so it's worth checking that map before you plan a Saturday errand that crosses town.
Where the Cars Go
With the square closed, parking moves out to the edges of downtown. The City of Dahlonega's downtown parking map shows the city-owned lots around the square and calls them the best options for the historic district. The same page says UNG, as a community partner, opens its S. Chestatee parking deck and some of its lots to the public on weeknights and weekends.
The weekend arrangement on that page is a standing policy, not a festival plan. The parking section of the festival's vendor page covers vendor passes and trailer storage, and it doesn't describe an attendee shuttle. For questions closer to the date, the city points people to the Dahlonega Visitors Center at (706) 864-3711.
After 8 pm Sunday, the Calendar Moves to Shorter Events
Once the barricades come down, the next five and a half weeks look very different. The festival ran nine hours a day, two days in a row. The listings between October 19 and the Christmas kickoff are a theater night, an afternoon walking tour, a two-hour trick-or-treat and an evening set at a music venue:
| Date | Event | Where | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thu, Oct 22 | Crime and Punishment Historical Walking Tour | Dahlonega Gold Museum | 2 to 3 pm |
| Sat, Oct 24 | Dahlonega's Got Talent | Holly Theatre Mainstage | 7:15 pm |
| Sun, Oct 25 | Crime and Punishment Historical Walking Tour | Dahlonega Gold Museum | 2 to 3 pm |
| Thu, Oct 29 | Crime and Punishment Historical Walking Tour | Dahlonega Gold Museum | 2 to 3 pm |
| Sat, Oct 31 | Scares on the Square | Dahlonega Square | 5 to 7 pm |
| Sun, Nov 1 | Crime and Punishment Historical Walking Tour | Dahlonega Gold Museum | 2 to 3 pm |
| Thu, Nov 5 | Crime and Punishment Historical Walking Tour | Dahlonega Gold Museum | 2 to 3 pm |
| Thu, Nov 5 | The Game Show Dahlonega: Fall Edition, by Planet Acorn | Holly Theatre | 7 pm |
| Sat, Nov 21 | James Corbin with guest Stuart Oliver | Canopy + the Roots | 6:30 to 8 pm |
The Gold Museum tour, listed on the Georgia State Parks history events calendar, repeats five times on Thursday and Sunday afternoons from October 22 to November 5. That gives you several chances to catch it once the downtown crowds have thinned. The Holly Theatre calendar has two evenings in the window: the hometown talent show on October 24 and Planet Acorn's game-show night on November 5.
Halloween lands on a Saturday this year. The Dahlonega Downtown Development Authority's Scares on the Square runs from 5:00 to 7:00 pm, with trick-or-treating through the downtown businesses. It's the only time the square is the main venue again between the festival and Thanksgiving week, and it lasts a quarter as long as one festival day.
The Gaps in the Calendar Are Real
Some weeks in this stretch have very little on the public calendars. As of mid-October, the DDA calendar shows only its business meeting for November, with no First Friday concert. Kaya's True Crime & Wine evenings fall on October 16 and 17, the same nights as festival setup and the festival Saturday. The DDA page for a Veterans Day parade still shows a 2021 date, so this year's plans aren't confirmed.
Those quiet weeks end on a fixed date. The Christmas in Dahlonega organizers list the square lighting for November 27, the Friday after Thanksgiving, with Santa visits running November 27 through December 29. The Visitors Center's Old Fashioned Christmas page adds Radford Windham performing Christmas songs in front of the Visitors Center at 5:30 pm on November 28, and it lists a 6:00 pm tree-lighting ceremony at the same spot.
Between Sunday, October 18 at 8:00 pm and Friday, November 27, the published downtown calendar holds nine events, and none of them closes a street.
Whether you're thinking about a place close enough to hear the parade or one far enough out to skip the barricades, the team at Nathan Fitts knows how Dahlonega's calendar affects daily life around the square. Let's Connect.
