Tallulah Gorge's Fall Calendar Moves to the Weekends in November: When to Hike the Floor and When to Watch From the Rim

On a normal day, 35 to 40 cubic feet of water per second runs through Tallulah Gorge. On an aesthetic release day the dam lets through 200 cfs, about five times the usual flow, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. On the whitewater weekends it lets through 500 cfs on Saturday and 700 cfs on Sunday. Every one of those days closes the gorge to hikers and climbers, and the southside staircase is closed to hikers as well.

Most write-ups stop at the list of dates. The more useful fact sits in the weekdays behind those dates. This October, the releases fall almost entirely on Wednesdays and Fridays. In November they land on Saturdays and Sundays. The schedule changes over the Halloween weekend, and that change decides which fall weekends can go to the gorge floor and which ones belong to the rim trails.

The 2026 Release Calendar, Sorted by Day of the Week

Georgia State Parks posts the 2026 aesthetic release dates as October 7, 9, 14, 16, 21, 23 and 31, and November 1. Whitewater boating weekends are November 7 and 8, 14 and 15, and 21 and 22. Here is how those dates fall on the calendar:

Week Release days Flow Gorge floor
Oct. 5 to 11 Wed. Oct. 7, Fri. Oct. 9 200 cfs Closed Wed. and Fri.; open the weekend of Oct. 10 to 11
Oct. 12 to 18 Wed. Oct. 14, Fri. Oct. 16 200 cfs Closed Wed. and Fri.; open the weekend of Oct. 17 to 18
Oct. 19 to 25 Wed. Oct. 21, Fri. Oct. 23 200 cfs Closed Wed. and Fri.; open the weekend of Oct. 24 to 25
Oct. 31 to Nov. 1 Sat. Oct. 31, Sun. Nov. 1 200 cfs Closed all weekend
Nov. 7 to 8 Sat. and Sun. 500 cfs Sat., 700 cfs Sun. Closed all weekend
Nov. 14 to 15 Sat. and Sun. 500 cfs Sat., 700 cfs Sun. Closed all weekend
Nov. 21 to 22 Sat. and Sun. 500 cfs Sat., 700 cfs Sun. Closed all weekend

That leaves three October weekends, October 10 to 11, 17 to 18 and 24 to 25, with no scheduled release. From Halloween through November 22, the weekends belong to the river.

The schedule can still change. During research, the park's homepage carried this alert without naming a date:

"The Aesthetic Flow has been cancelled for this weekend."

A call to the Jane Hurt Yarn Interpretive Center at 706-754-7970 before you head out confirms what the water is actually doing that day.

October Weekends Are the Gorge Floor Window

The park issues gorge floor permits, often called Sliding Rock permits, under rules that reward people who live close enough to arrive early. The permits are free, available at the Interpretive Center only on the day of your visit, and given out after a safety briefing. Here's how it works:

  1. Briefings start promptly at 8 a.m., 10 a.m. and noon, while permits last. The park warns that late arrivals may miss out and that on busy days permits often run out early in the morning.
  2. The park issues 100 permits a day. They can't be reserved ahead or transferred.
  3. You'll need proper footwear. Flip-flops and Crocs aren't allowed, and neither are dogs.
  4. The park doesn't recommend the trail for hikers 8 or younger. It describes the route as very strenuous, with 1,000 stairs.

Release days aren't the only thing that limits access. Weather, rain and water flow can also restrict the gorge floor, and the park notes that wet rocks are deceptively slippery. Group rules depend on the day of the week, too. Groups of 20 can get permits only on Saturdays and Sundays, and groups of 30 only Monday through Friday.

Taken together, the weekends of October 10, 17 and 24 are the last open weekends on the gorge floor before the calendar changes. After November 1, the floor opens back up on weekdays, since no releases are scheduled midweek, but weekend access doesn't return until after November 22.

Midweek Releases Line Up With Friday Nights at the Park

October's Friday releases overlap with the park's evening programs. Hayride, S'mores, and More! runs Fridays, October 9, 16, 23 and 30, from 5 to 7 p.m. It's open to campers and day visitors for $5 plus parking. Three of those four Fridays are also release days, and the higher flow continues until 8 p.m.

The rest of the park's fall calendar fills the open weekends:

  • Fall Fest, Saturday, October 17, 5 to 7 p.m., with carnival-style games and hayrides at the Jane Hurt Yarn Interpretive Center.
  • Spooky Tales on the Trails, Saturday, October 24, 7 to 8 p.m., with Appalachian tales from author Kat Von Hacke.
  • Trunk or Treat, Saturday, October 31, 5:30 to 7 p.m., with hayrides and prizes for costumes and decorated vehicles.
  • Tallulah Legends Hike, Friday, November 6, 5 to 6 p.m., the evening before the first whitewater weekend.
  • Fall Movie Night, Friday, November 20, 6 to 8 p.m., at the picnic shelter, with free popcorn and candy for sale.

October 31 is the busiest date on the list. It's an aesthetic release day, Trunk or Treat runs that evening, and it's the final night of the season for Tallulah Falls Bluegrass at the Opry. The Town says the Opry runs Saturday nights, weather permitting, from the first Saturday in April through the last Saturday in October, starting around 7 p.m.

November Weekends Are for the Rim

Once the whitewater weekends begin, the park lists viewing hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., while kayakers take on the falls and spectators watch from the rim. Other sources run earlier. The Town says the dam release begins at 8 a.m. and kayakers start at 9 a.m., and American Whitewater gives an 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. window for November 7. Getting there before 10 puts you on the rim as the water comes up.

Georgia DNR names Inspiration Point, North Rim overlook No. 1 and South Rim overlook No. 9 as the best spots for watching whitewater. The park trail map adds South Rim overlooks 8 and 10. Each overlook faces different water:

  • North Rim No. 1 looks toward Oceana Falls and Bridal Veil Falls, two of the drops kayakers run. No. 1A faces the suspension bridge, Devil's Pulpit and Hurricane Falls.
  • North Rim Nos. 2 and 3 frame L'Eau d'Or Falls, the top of Tempesta and Hawthorne Pool. Nos. 4 and 5 look toward the dam and the upper gorge.
  • South Rim No. 8 looks onto Hurricane Falls and its pool. No. 9 takes in Hurricane Falls, Oceana Falls and Caledonia Cascade. No. 10 shows Caledonia Cascade and the area around the Wallenda tower.

The Town suggests starting both rim walks at the Interpretive Center. Each trail runs about three-quarters of a mile one way. For a view that skips the park's trails, Tallulah Point Overlook on Scenic Loop 15 offers a free roadside look into the gorge. Kringle Trading Co. sits at the same spot, 940 Tallulah Gorge Scenic Loop, and sells local art, snacks and gifts.

What's Open in Town on a Wednesday Release vs. a Whitewater Saturday

The midweek releases also affect where you can eat. Several of Tallulah Falls' food and shopping stops keep weekend-heavy hours, so a Wednesday release day and a November Saturday call for different plans.

Stop Address Posted hours Wednesday release Whitewater weekend
Ugly Mug Tavern 110 Main St. Wed. to Fri. 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Sat. 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Sun. 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Open Open from 8 a.m.
Tallulah 1882 105 Moss St. Mon. to Thu. 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Fri. to Sun. 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Open Open from 8 a.m.
TAP YARD at Tallulah Adventures 11785 Hwy. 441 Thu. to Mon. 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Closed Open
Wander North Georgia Outpost 11785 Hwy. 441 Fri. and Sat. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Sun. 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Closed Open

On a Wednesday release, the Main Street end of town is the choice. Tallulah 1882 serves teas, espresso and baked goods, and Ugly Mug Tavern serves food and drinks until 9 p.m. On Friday releases, TAP YARD's family-friendly outdoor bar and kitchen joins in, with beer, wine and food until 7 p.m. On whitewater Saturdays, both Ugly Mug and Tallulah 1882 open at 8 a.m., which lets you grab coffee or breakfast before the 10 a.m. viewing window opens.

The General Store at 100 Main Street is open seven days a week and sells local goods and souvenirs along with seasonal produce, eggs, pantry supplies, firewood and toiletries. The family that runs it operated the shop at Tallulah Point Overlook before moving to Main Street in 2020. MariaLovelessArt Gallery shares the 100 Main Street address.

One Shoreline Question Still Open

Upstream, the Terrora Day Use Area beach on the park's 63-acre lake has been closed for construction. The work includes a better swimming area and an ADA kayak launch, and kayaking is unavailable until it's finished. The Clayton Tribune reported the site was set to reopen by September. Its rendering shows improved ADA parking, kayak access and storage, accessible picnic access and fresh beach sand. As of early October, the park's notice still says the beach is closed, and no reopening has been confirmed. Calling the Interpretive Center is the quickest way to find out whether the new launch is open before the whitewater weekends.
